Cockermouth is in need of a new hospital which serves the primary care needs of the community and delivers local health services people rely upon

PLANS for a new £11m hospital in Cockermouth have been provisionally approved by NHS Cumbria, pending formal approval by NHS North West over the coming weeks. Under the plans, the existing Cockermouth Cottage Hospital will be redeveloped to include a nine-bed hospital, doctors' surgeries and a dental practice and will enable two of the town's GP practices to move out of the portable cabins they have been using since the 2009 floods. Dr John Howarth, GP and clinical director of NHS Cumbria, said: "Cockermouth is in need of a new hospital which serves the primary care needs of the community and delivers local health services people rely upon."
