Kier has completed an £87m surgical centre at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton for Somerset NHS Foundation Trust.
The construction firm worked with architect BDP (Building Design Partnership) and a wider project team including specialist supply chain partners.
The new King’s Building brings together operating theatres, endoscopy services, theatre admissions and intensive care within a purpose-built facility.
The new centre includes eight operating theatres, six endoscopy rooms and a 22-bed intensive care unit, alongside patient recovery and clinical support areas.
Two of the operating theatres are hybrid theatres, combining advanced imaging technology with surgical facilities to support both surgery and interventional radiology.
The facility has been designed to increase surgical capacity and support the Trust in reducing waiting times, while replacing the former theatres and critical care unit, which were housed in buildings dating back to the Second World War.
The project was procured through the Department of Health and Social Care’s ProCure22 framework, with Kier appointed to deliver the scheme in 2021.
Construction of the main surgical centre began in 2023 following a programme of enabling works across the hospital estate.
The wider redevelopment of Musgrove Park Hospital
The development formed part of the wider Musgrove 2030 programme, which aims to modernise the hospital estate and improve healthcare facilities across Somerset.
The project involved construction within a live hospital environment, with existing services maintained throughout the works.
“This major investment has supported local jobs, the supply chain and economy, and will ensure people across Taunton and wider Somerset have access to modern, high-quality care closer to home,” said Matt Griffiths, Health Sector Director at Kier Construction.
The new intensive care unit provides 22 single ensuite rooms for level two and three critical care patients, with increased natural light and access to outdoor space.
The endoscopy department has also been purpose-built, providing dedicated clinical and patient areas and supporting future training and development.
The opening of the King’s Building is the latest major investment in facilities at Musgrove Park Hospital and will support further changes to services across the site.
Musgrove Park Hospital reopened its Nuclear Medicine department following a major refurbishment, which was delivered by Ergéa UK.
In 2021, ModuleCo completed a state-of-the-art ophthalmic operating theatre suite.
