Local health planners have confirmed that funding is in place to build a modern health facility on the former site of the old community hospital in Weybridge.
The three-storey building that was once on Church Street burnt down in July of 2017, which reports alleged was likely caused by an electrical fault in a wall-mounted air conditioning unit.
“The new purpose-built facility will give the GP Practice a spacious permanent home, and the additional community health services will make a real difference to patients and families in Weybridge,” said Steve McCarthy, chair of the Patient Participation Group at The Phoenix Family Practice.
Earlier discussions about the project from 2017 noted a funding gap between the estimated cost for the build and the money available.
Now in 2025, the green light for funding for the facility follows years of planning under the Surrey Heartlands Integrated Care Board (ICB) and partners, including NHS Property Services, North West Surrey Alliance and Elmbridge Borough Council.
Willmott Dixon was selected to begin the work on the new community health centre.
The initial work includes installing perimeter hoarding, site offices and minor demolition in preparation for the main build phase, which will begin in early 2026.
The facility is expected to open by spring 2027.
Once opened, the new two-story building will house the GP site, “The Phoenix Family Practice” and a suite of health services tailored to community needs.
This includes maternity services, same-day urgent care services, diagnostic services, and flexible community and clinical spaces.
The redevelopment of Weybridge Hospital is part of the NHS Long Term Plan.
The programme aims to restore and modernise community health and wellbeing services that were lost when the original hospital was destroyed by fire.
Once completed, the new health centre will allow Weybridge residents to access care locally and avoid long travel times to other facilities.
