Integrated Health Projects (IHP), the VINCI Building and Sir Robert McAlpine healthcare joint venture, has delivered three mental health facilities in Derby and Chesterfield.
“Our shared goal was to create a warm, welcoming environment that supports patients on their recovery journey,” said Chris Winspear, Regional Director at IHP.
The facilities were constructed by IHP in close partnership with Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.
They are part of the Trust’s £150m Making Room for Dignity programme, which aims to replace outdated inpatient accommodation with modern, therapeutic settings.
The three mental health facilities
The newly opened facilities include the Carsington Unit and Kingfisher House at Kingsway Hospital in Derby, and the Derwent Unit at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.
Each Adult Acute Care unit provides 54 individual en‑suite rooms, featuring a range of dedicated therapeutic spaces, including shared therapy suites, kitchens, indoor fitness areas, arts and activity rooms, and secure rooftop terraces and gardens.
Kingfisher House also incorporates a 14‑bed Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), offering specialised support for service users requiring a higher level of care.
All three buildings opened to patients in 2025, replacing dormitory‑style wards with modern, private accommodation designed to enhance dignity, privacy and wellbeing.
Other IHP projects
The mental health facilities add to IHP’s growing portfolio of projects delivered this year.
The joint venture also delivered the £105m NHS National Rehabilitation Centre in Nottinghamshire to provide rehabilitation services and workforce training.
In addition, IHP completed the BEACH Building at Royal Bournemouth Hospital and a £41m project for new wards and a gym at Hellesdon Hospital near Norwich.
