IKON Architects wins design contract for paediatric and adult audiology department at Lister Hospital

The architectural practice has been selected by East and North Hertfordshire to design a calming and engaging space for children and families

East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust is preparing to welcome a new Paediatric and Adult Audiology department at Lister Hospital, with work set to start on site imminently. 

The project is being led by IKON Architects, with resident architects Flora Teng and Thaleia Markopoulou responsible for the scheme’s design.

“The goal was simple but important: to create a space where children feel at ease, and families feel supported,” said the project team.

The paediatric waiting area and units have been designed to include soothing colour palettes, playful graphics and carefully considered materials have all been incorporated to make visits more comfortable and enjoyable.  

R&B Refurbishment has been appointed as the principal contractor. 

The full project team also includes:

  • Architect and Principal Designer Building Regulations (PDBR): IKON – Tania Kosma, Flora Teng, Thaleia Markopoulou
  • Specialists: QuietStar – Jason Saunders
  • Principal Designer under the Construction (PDCDM): Walker Cotter Safety– Allana Coetzee
  • Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP): Wallace Whittle – Jonathan Blackhurst, Shibs Sivaraj, Joe Varghese
  • Structural engineer: Adkins Consultants – Mehrdad Bahari, James Powell

The Trust and project team will monitor progress as construction begins on site.

Other recent IKON projects 

IKON Architecture and Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust have secured planning approval for a small refurbishment at Wycombe Hospital, as part of ongoing efforts to improve the ageing facility.

The practice has also recently completed a refurbishment of the ophthalmology facilities at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, expanding the department by 30%.
