Somerset NHS Foundation Trust has secured £54.8m from the Government for infrastructure and building improvements across its estate.
The funding forms part of a £1.5bn national investment programme announced in September to address urgent problems with NHS hospital buildings and facilities.
The largest allocation, £49m, will fund fire safety, infrastructure and refurbishment works within the ward and theatre areas of the tower block at Yeovil District Hospital.
A further £5.8m will be invested in fire safety infrastructure and building improvements at Crewkerne Community Hospital, Broadway Health Park in Bridgwater, and Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton.
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust said the investment would support improvements to buildings delivering services to patients across the county.
“It is very important that we update and improve our infrastructure to support the care and services we deliver. This money will support us to improve the infrastructure at buildings that deliver important services,” said David Shannon, Director of Strategy and Digital Development at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust.
Shannon said the allocation for Yeovil District Hospital was particularly significant because the site provides acute hospital services to people in Yeovil and surrounding areas.
The Government's wider funding package includes more than £200m for 10 major hospital projects and £1.3bn for maintenance, safety and resilience improvements across the NHS estate.
The investment comes through the Estates Safety Fund, which is intended to address ageing infrastructure and critical safety risks across NHS buildings.
The Trust said it will now begin working up the details of the improvements planned for each site.
