MTX Contracts has been appointed by Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust to design and build a new acute kidney hub at Basildon University Hospital.
“We chose MTX as they were able to offer the quality of construction with the speed we needed to get things moving,” said Mark Hope, Interim Director of Estates at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation.
The single-storey facility will expand renal capacity on the site, which serves a population of 1.2 million across mid and south Essex.
The new building will include an eight-room endoscopy suite and offer X-rays, CT and MRI scans, blood tests and much more.
It will also provide a range of wellbeing services, including a purpose-built activity centre and a community library.
A renal facility is a place where patients can receive diagnosis, treatment and management for all forms of kidney disease.
It is particularly important for patients who need to receive dialysis and who have chronic kidney failure, known as end-stage renal disease.
The new facility will have six four-bed wards and two single-bed dialysis units that include individual treatment bays, integrated water treatment systems and enhanced space for staff to manage patients safely and efficiently.
It will also include assessment rooms, staff facilities and a first-floor plant room with air-handling and engineering systems.
The project will be completed using hybrid techniques and offsite manufacturing to accelerate delivery ahead of the planned summer 2026 opening.
Offsite manufacturing will also reduce environmental impact and minimise disruption on the busy hospital site.
Precision-engineered steel-framed units will be manufactured offsite before being craned into position, with key mechanical and electrical components also produced and tested in factory conditions.
The new facility will allow the existing renal unit to decant into the new space, unlocking further upgrade opportunities within the main hospital.
“Our healthcare-dedicated architects, designers and project managers are skilled at working within hospital environments while minimising disruption for patients and staff,” said David Hartley, the Managing Director of MTX.
What has MTX been building in 2025?
This year, MTX has been appointed to multiple other projects for NHS critical care settings.
In May, at Wrightington Hospital in Lancashire, MTX delivered a new advanced operating theatre using off-site, factory-built steel modules.
Also in May, MTX completed the Community Diagnostic Centre for Milford Community Hospital, bringing enhanced diagnostic capabilities closer to patients’ homes.
The site includes a laminar-flow, ultra-clean theatre that adds capacity for approximately 1,200 orthopaedic procedures a year while increasing recovery-bed capacity from three to five.
In July, at Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, the firm handed over a new 1,400 sqm Urology Outpatients Department.
The modular unit features consulting and exam rooms, an ultrasound bay, treatment and lithotripter rooms, and a flexible laboratory, designed to support urology, surgical and general outpatient services.
In August, MTX also delivered the structural framework for a Cancer and Surgical Innovation Centre at Royal Surrey County Hospital, a £41.5m, multi-floor build that will dramatically expand surgical capacity.
