Three new operating theatres are now fully operational at Salford Royal Hospital, thanks to a wide-ranging building services design from Steven Hunt & Associates.
One of the top-performing hospitals in the country, Salford Royal is a national centre for a wide range of specialist treatments, including brain, bone, kidney, intestine and dermatology. The new suite of three operating theatres, designed by Day Architectural, boasts some of the most-advanced building services infrastructure of any UK hospital, with the services for the three new operating theatres - H, J and K – engineered by Steven Hunt & Associates.
The company engineered theatre H as an ‘ultra clean’ theatre, suitable for orthopaedic procedures and any surgery where there is a high infection risk. This theatre includes an ultra-clean zone with a filtration canopy to deliver 500 air changes per hour with High Efficiency Particulate Absorption (HEPA) filtering, removing 99.99% of microscopic particles from the air. The remaining two theatres have been designed as general surgery facilities with Theatre K fitted out for laparoscopic procedures and Theatre J semi-enabled for the addition of laparoscopic capabilities in the future.
The building services design also includes a network of automated doors to reduce the risk of contamination from air circulating in the corridors and PACS panels recessed into the wall for viewing of X-rays, scan images and patient records direct from the hospital’s server.
