P+HS Architects has submitted a planning application to build a new Same Day Emergency Care and mobility facility at Airedale General Hospital.
The proposed development comprises a purpose-built, three-storey building designed to support multi-speciality assessment and treatment.
Plans show that the first floor will house a dedicated same day emergency care unit, directly connected to the hospital’s existing Acute Assessment Unit via a new link bridge, enabling integrated clinical workflows.
The ground and upper levels will accommodate supporting functions, including mobility services and plant space, with rooftop photovoltaics also included in the design.
The building will be accessed from the north of the site via the existing loop road, with provision for accessible parking, drop-off areas, and pedestrian routes to the main entrance.
Positioned on the north east corner of the site, the scheme adopts a concrete frame with metal cladding and a neutral-toned facade, designed to align with the surrounding estate.
The same day emergency care facility will help maintain safe patient flow while the trust prepares to redevelop Airedale General Hospital.
Gleeds was appointed project manager in April 2025, with Archus and KPMG providing specialist healthcare expertise.
P+HS Architects was named lead designer in May alongside AHR and HDR, supported by Curtins and AECOM, while enabling works, including early demolition, are now underway ahead of main construction.
The scheme has progressed at pace, with the project team beginning RIBA Stage 2 in December 2025.
Subject to approval, enabling works are expected to begin in late spring 2026.
How the hospital fits within the New Hospital Programme
At the start of this year, the NHS reset the timelines for the New Hospital Programme, which seeks to modernise ageing hospital estates across the country.
The reset created four multi-year waves, reshuffling 40 hospital projects to reflect realistic timelines, funding limits, and safety priorities, delaying final completion to the mid-2040s.
Airedale General Hospital remains a priority scheme in the reset, confirmed in Wave 1 due to the urgent need to replace its RAAC-affected buildings, keeping it among the earliest projects despite wider programme delays.
