The construction firm has appointed Simon Kydd, a former Wates director, to lead its healthcare delivery team as it seeks to grow its footprint in the sector

Sir Robert McAlpine (SRM) has appointed former Wates Director Simon Kydd to oversee the delivery of healthcare schemes across the UK.

Kydd will serve as Head of Healthcare Delivery, succeeding Stuart McArthur, who held the role for the past decade.

The move comes as the contractor continues to target growth across healthcare, where demand for major capital projects remains strong.

Kydd joins SRM with more than 20 years of experience in healthcare construction and consultancy.

Prior to joining the company, he was Director of Health and Education at Wates and has also held senior healthcare leadership roles at WSP and Balfour Beatty.

During his career, he has been involved in the delivery of a wide range of NHS projects, helping to develop healthcare strategies, secure framework opportunities and oversee major hospital and clinical developments.

This includes involvement in acute hospital developments, mental health facilities and diagnostics-led estate upgrades delivered for NHS Trusts.

In his new role, Kydd will lead SRM's healthcare business and support the delivery of projects through Integrated Health Projects (IHP), the contractor's healthcare joint venture with VINCI Building.

The business is currently involved in several major NHS schemes, including projects being delivered through the government's New Hospital Programme.

This includes the early enabling and redevelopment work at sites such as Leighton Hospital in Crewe and other Trust estates prioritised for replacement and modernisation.

The appointment is expected to support SRM's work in securing and delivering large-scale healthcare developments as the NHS continues to invest in the modernisation of its estate.

Kydd left Wates at the end of 2024, and set up his own business during that time before coming to SRM.

Through his business, Kydd Associates, he supported developers, main contractors, consultants, offering services in fields such as client management, business development and procurement advice.

“I am thrilled to be joining Sir Robert McAlpine at such an exciting time for the UK health sector,” said Kydd.
