Storm Building delivered the refurbishment of theatres 1, 2, and the recovery area at Whittington Hospital

Whittington Health NHS Trust has marked the successful completion of a major refurbishment project for theatres 1, 2, and the recovery area at Whittington Hospital.

The project was delivered by UK-based Storm Building.

The works, carried out within a busy and critical hospital environment, were celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in April.

The project, managed in close collaboration between Storm Building, Whittington Health NHS Trust, and key stakeholders, has enhanced vital surgical areas, ensuring safer, more efficient care for patients.

Paul Sumsion, Managing Director of Storm Building, said: “Storm Building Ltd takes great pride in delivering projects within the health sector for our NHS clients and creating a positive impact on the wider community.

"Thanks to close collaboration with our client, their stakeholders, and our supply chain, we successfully completed this complex project on time, ensuring that key operations can proceed as planned.”

The ceremony included remarks from project lead Bryce Wilson, who spoke about the successes and challenges of the refurbishment, and acting chief executive Dr Clare Dollery, who praised the collaborative effort and its positive impact on patient care.

Key improvements delivered by the project include:

  • Upgraded ventilation systems: Theatres 1 and 2 benefited from a complete overhaul of their ducting systems, essential for maintaining clean, sterile air in surgical spaces. The team removed the entire ceiling to install the new systems, improving patient safety.
  • Installation of an ultra-clean canopy in theatre 1: Positioned directly above the surgical table, this canopy creates an infection-free environment, vital for high-risk trauma and spinal procedures.
  • Enhanced fire safety systems: Upgrades ensure that, in the unlikely event of a fire, patients and staff can be evacuated quickly and safely.

Dr Dollery described the project as a significant achievement for the trust, improving the hospital’s surgical environment and supporting the delivery of safe, high-quality care.

Further refurbishment works are planned for other areas of the theatre department.
