Western Building Systems has delivered a £25m facility that will offer residents 150,000 additional diagnostic tests annually, reducing pressure on local hospitals

Patients across Slough and East Berkshire can now access vital diagnostic tests more quickly, following the official opening of the Slough Community Diagnostic Centre.

The £25m facility forms part of a national NHS programme to improve diagnostic access and represents a key milestone in Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust’s 2030 strategy for more integrated healthcare.

The design and construction of this CDC was carried out by Western Building Systems, with Stuart Hortop from NHS Property Services supporting the trust in developing the proposals for the site.

The centre, which is open seven days a week, will provide up to 150,000 extra tests each year, including CT, MRI, ultrasound, X‑ray, lung function, and blood tests.

By bringing services closer to home, the CDC is designed to reduce waiting times, ease pressure on hospitals such as Wexham Park, and support GPs and community clinics so urgent patients are seen more quickly.

“The [CDC] supports the national commitment to cut waiting times and will deliver easy access to world-class diagnostic services,” said Lance McCarthy, Chief Executive of Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust.

“This project has been a real journey, and its success is a true testament to partnership, collaboration, and shared commitment across all involved. The finished building says it all,” said Rory McGuigan, Managing Director at Western Building Systems.

How the CDC is part of the national framework

The CDC is part of a national network of hubs across England, providing millions of additional tests annually to help identify illnesses such as cancer and heart disease earlier.

Linked imaging systems and secure digital reporting ensure clinicians can access results quickly across the NHS, supporting faster clinical decisions and a smoother patient experience.

The design and planning of the centre incorporated feedback from local residents, faith groups and community organisations.

Flexible appointment times, accessible transport links, and a calm, modern environment aim to make visits as straightforward as possible.

At the opening, Tan Dhesi, MP for Slough, joined representatives from Western Building Systems and Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust to mark the completion of the project.
