Terrington Data Management, a York (UK)-based software company engaged in the development of Data and Document Management solutions for oil, gas, pharmaceutical and chemical Industries, are pleased report on the success in offering the company’s software as Software as Service (SaaS) via Cloud-based computing. As alternative to conventional fixed licence fee approach to software delivery, Cloud-based SaaS offers Terrington’s new and existing customers several advantages, most significantly a managed service, without IT headaches and implementation without the capital expense that normally accompanies the licence fee approach. For Terrington offering the services has brought in six figure annual revenues and continues to grow. Customers embracing this new technology include LGC, EnQuest PLC, British HorseRacing Authority (BHA), and Severn Unival. Mark Williams, Terrington’s Managing Director, commented on success of ‘The Cloud’ and SaaS:

“Feedback from both existing and prospective clients highlighted a strong interest in the ‘Software as a Service’ proposition as an alternative to the traditional IT models. The Cloud offers reduced capital expenditure for our customers, in addition to providing them with access to a simple and efficient managed service. For the majority of our Blue Chip customers, these are vital benefits when considering a new solution.”

Although the underlying principle of Cloud computing dates back to the 1950’s it has only recently been used to provide software as a service, delivered over the Internet through a Web Interface. Clients have a dedicated, secure virtual machine (Server) and can access to the software anywhere in the world - as long as they have access to the Internet. For Terrington this could include clients in diverse locations, from North Sea oils rigs to laboratory clean rooms in Singapore.
