Building Services Engineers, PSA, has completed a project at Broadgreen Hospital in Liverpool.

Completed in September 2025, PSA converted a former medical records storage area into a fully operational ward at Broadgreen Hospital for Liverpool University Foundation Hospitals NHS Trust.

PSA provided technical designs for the building services up until RIBA Stage 4. This included HVAC and energy systems.

The company completed these works inside an active hospital environment.

The hospital also wanted to establish relationships with consultants who understood the unique challenges of healthcare environments and could work collaboratively with their existing project team.

PSA worked alongside DAY Architects and contractor City Build. The teams used Revit to coordinate services in the space.

PSA explained that design elements included:

  • Lighting and power systems tailored for healthcare environments
  • New air handling unit plant installation on the roof
  • Full compliance with Healthcare Technical Memorandum (HTM) standards
  • Heating and cooling systems for year-round patient comfort
  • Ventilation systems meeting clinical air quality requirements
  • Water supply infrastructure for medical and domestic use
  • Medical gas installations
  • Drainage solutions

Broadgreen Hospital has made a few other additions to its estate in recent years.

In 2023, the site added a new surgical hub, which is designed to provide planned, low-complexity procedures, focusing on specialities such as orthopaedics, general surgery, urology and ear, nose and throat. The hospital also hosts a regional dermatology service.

Before that, in 2022, the hospital also added a nurse and therapy-led Reablement Assessment Hub. This hub provides care for patients who require ongoing assessment and intervention for discharge back to their usual place of residence, reducing length of stay and improving quality of life.
