The architectural practice has completed a major fit-out of a day surgery unit at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, part of a wider phased redevelopment programme

Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has overseen the completion of a major phased redevelopment programme at its Treatment Centre and Day Surgery Unit in London.

Hunters, an architectural practice based in York, delivered the fit-out of the Day Surgery Unit as part of the wider phased redevelopment programme.

The scheme, which began construction in early 2024, was delivered in two phases to modernise and expand the hospital’s Treatment Centre facilities within a live acute hospital environment.

Logan Construction served as principal contractor across both phases, delivering the works while maintaining full operational continuity across adjacent surgical departments.

Phase one of the programme focused on enabling and decant works, including the creation of a new administration area and therapies outpatient department at lower ground floor level.

This allowed the existing ground floor therapies department to be relocated ahead of the main surgical works.

The phase also included strip-out and demolition works, MEP upgrades and energy efficiency improvements aligned with the Trust’s net zero objectives.

According to Logan Construction, the administration area was completed in June 2024, with the therapies department handed over in August 2024.

Phase two commenced in October 2024 and delivered the main expansion and refurbishment of the Treatment Centre and Day Surgery Unit.

This included the construction of two new operating theatres, upgraded recovery and treatment areas, staff facilities, discharge and changing areas, bed bay cabins, and associated mechanical and electrical infrastructure.

Within this phase, Hunters delivered the interior fit-out of the Day Surgery Unit, including a new 24-hour recovery ward with a stage one recovery area, and 28 private patient cabins designed to support post-operative recovery and privacy.

Hunters confirmed completion of its fit-out works in March 2026.

The practice also worked with CW+ to introduce wellbeing-led design features throughout the unit, including natural colour palettes, wall murals, floral detailing, and back-lit ceiling installations.

The redevelopment was carried out in a fully operational hospital environment, with five adjacent operating theatres remaining in use throughout construction.

As part of the wider Treatment Centre redevelopment, the department footprint has expanded by more than 70%.

The scheme retains five existing operating theatres and adds two new theatres, bringing the total to seven within the department.

The upgraded facilities are designed to support increased day-case activity, more complex procedures, and enhanced overnight recovery capacity.
