Point-of-care MRI system launched in UK

Imaging solution aimed at primary care centres and GP clinics

A new MRI technology has been unveiled in the UK that will make advanced imaging procedures available in primary care centres and GP clinics across the country.

Esaote has announced the launch of its O-scan device – a space-saving, easy-to-use system designed to take images of patients in situ. A simple interface then shares these images with specialist radiologists for faster diagnosis and treatment.

Featuring a fully-adjustable chair system for improved patient comfort and flexibility, the technology means it will now be cheaper to take images and they can be done at the point of care, rather than patients needing to be transferred to MRI suites. This gives the potential for scanning in community-based clinics and surgeries.

“The O-scan does more in less space,” said Cor van der Flier, Esaote’s UK managing director. “The innovative design integrates a complete MRI system, including RF shielding, in one unique structure, minimising the total space needed for installation. The O-scan can be installed in virtually any office or practice with ease.”

He added: “As the NHS reshapes and re-organises, it is expected that demand for compact MRI systems will increase in the UK, as it has in continental Europe. “The O-scan’s low-maintenance technology, low-energy consumption, no cryogen, and remote service possibilities, make O-scan a good investment, even for sites with a low throughput.”

O-scan comes with all network, archiving and documentation features to work either stand alone or as part of an integrated environment. It has an integrated DVD archive and retrieve software package, printer facility and patient CD package.

Key system features include:

  • Maintenance-free open permanent magnet
  • No need for an RF Shielding cage
  • Compact installation space of 9sq m
  • Low power consumption: only 1Kw in a normal 220/110V power outlet
  • Ergonomic design for maximum patient comfort
  • Complete set of dedicated optimised DPA coils
  • All imaging sequences used in MSK settings
  • Full set of pre-defined sequences and protocols
  • User-defined sequences and customised examination protocols
  • Multi planar scout
  • Windows-based user interface
  • Extensive image viewing, analysis and elaboration tools
  • Sophisticated storage functionality which is particularly useful for systems connected to PACS networks
  • Full DICOM connectivity
