Guernsey's Health and Social Care has confirmed a heavy price tag to tackle fire safety issues at a new critical care unit at Princess Elizabeth Hospital

Remedial works to address fire safety issues in the new critical care unit at Guernsey's Princess Elizabeth Hospital are expected to cost up to £2m, Health and Social Care has confirmed.

The additional works were identified during ongoing remediation of the unit's ventilation system, according to Health and Social Care (HSC) President George Oswald.

The architect for the project was Arcadis.

Investigations found the critical care unit did not fully comply with current fire safety regulations.

The stricter standards were introduced across the UK following the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire, in which 72 people died, and apply particularly to buildings where occupants may be at greater risk in the event of a fire.

Dermot Mullin, HSC Director of Operations, said the work was essential to bring the facility into compliance with current regulations.

"[This] stems from failings in the original fire strategy,” he said in recent reporting.

The critical care unit, part of the Princess Elizabeth Hospital in Guernsey, had already been subject to remedial works relating to its ventilation system before the fire safety issues were uncovered.

The estimated £2m cost highlights the financial and operational impact of post-occupancy compliance failures in healthcare buildings.

Fire compartmentation, smoke control and evacuation strategies must meet enhanced standards for vulnerable patients.

Healthcare estates teams across the UK have faced increased scrutiny of fire safety arrangements since Grenfell, with many hospitals reassessing cladding, fire stopping, ventilation interfaces and overall fire strategies to align with updated guidance and regulation.

HSC has not yet confirmed a timetable for completing the works, but officials said the remedial programme is intended to ensure the unit can safely operate in line with current statutory requirements.
