This week, the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust (SaTH) opened two new hospital wards at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
“These new wards not only expand our capacity ready for winter but also reflect our focus on creating environments that support high-quality patient recovery and wellbeing,” said Ned Hobbs, Chief Operating Officer at the Shrewsbury Telford Hospital Trust.
The new wards provide 56 spacious single rooms for patients, more staff bases and enhanced infection prevention and control measures.
Construction company ModuleCo completed 90% of the construction for the wards off-site.
The two-storey modular facility has larger, more modern patient bays that improve comfort for patients and operational flow.
“In eight months we have been able to provide a facility built to the latest standards while minimising the disruption to ongoing hospital activities,” said Jonathan Brindley, Sales Director for ModuleCo.
The wards have freed up space in the centre of the hospital, by relocating gastroenterology and surgical services from Ward 25, which creates room for a new general medical ward.
The new wards are part of SaTH’s wider urgent and emergency care improvement plans.
In May, VINCI Building marked a topping-out milestone of a 27,000 sqm four-storey expansion at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, which is expected to be completed by 2028.
The Trust says that later this month it will also open 40 acute assessment spaces at Princess Royal Hospital.
