The new Sunderland Specialist Eye Hospital has reached a significant construction milestone following its successful handover by Kier Construction ahead of opening to patients later this summer.
Delivered on behalf of Sunderland City Council and South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, the facility is located within the Riverside Sunderland regeneration area and has been designed to provide modern specialist eye care services for communities across the North East.
The project was developed through extensive collaboration with clinical staff, patients and other stakeholders, helping to shape a facility tailored to the needs of those who will use it.
The resulting design aims to support improved patient experience while providing a contemporary environment for the delivery of specialist ophthalmology services.
Kier Construction said the handover represents a major milestone for healthcare infrastructure in the region and highlighted the collaborative approach taken throughout the project.
The new hospital has also been designed with sustainability in mind, creating a modern healthcare environment intended to support long-term service delivery while reducing environmental impact.
The facility will sit alongside the £4.2m Northern Ophthalmic Research and Innovation Institute (NORI), which aims to use routine eye scan data and health records to support earlier detection of conditions including heart disease, diabetes, dementia and stroke.
Building services specialist Dalkia UK, which supported the delivery of the project, described the completion as an important achievement for healthcare provision in the North East.
The company said the new facility would create a modern, sustainable environment for specialist eye care and deliver benefits for patients for years to come.
The Sunderland Specialist Eye Hospital is expected to open to patients later this summer.
