Major enabling works for the New University Hospital Monklands development in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, have continued at pace over the past year.
Laing O’Rourke has completed significant groundworks and delivered social value benefits to the local community.
During the past 12 months, workers excavated enough soil to fill 120 Olympic-sized swimming pools and drilled 2,280 holes to depths of 20 metres as part of a programme to stabilise the ground ahead of construction of the new hospital.
The project has also generated more than £135,000 in social value through a range of community initiatives, including toy and clothing donations to local groups, educational engagement with schools, support for local employment opportunities and other community-focused activities.
The scheme has also supported skills development and workforce growth, with nine graduates and eight apprentices joining the project team.
The Laing O’Rourke team, including Project Manager Gerry Vallianatos, Site Engineer Abby Cruickshank and Senior Social Value Advisor Irene Gibb, have reflected on the progress made to date and the work undertaken across the site during the enabling works phase.
The New University Hospital Monklands project is one of the largest healthcare infrastructure developments in Scotland and is progressing through its preparatory stages ahead of the main construction programme.
