Laing O’Rourke wins Calderdale Royal Hospital delivery contract

Laing O’Rourke has signed the contract with Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust (CHFT) to double the size of Calderdale Royal Hospital (CRH)

Laing O’Rourke has signed the contract with Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust (CHFT) to double the size of Calderdale Royal Hospital (CRH).

The design and build firm was brought on as preferred bidder for desing in March 2024, and the build received the green light from the council in October 2025.

The new hospital will provide a new Emergency Department, with a dedicated Children’s Emergency Department, and eight new wards. Once open, CRH will provide all unplanned (acute) services, with all planned care being located at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary (HRI).

The approved plans for the new hospital building were designed by Laing O’Rourke and reflect extensive input from patients, staff and local communities.

Now signed on to deliver the project too, Laing O’Rourke will bring its experience in delivering major healthcare projects, and its industry-leading approach to modern methods of construction (MMC) and offsite manufacturing, to drive greater certainty, quality and productivity.

Calderdale Royal Hospital is also an early adopter of a technology partnership between Royal Philips and The Walt Disney Company to bring Disney characters and storytelling into MRI suites, with the aim of making scans less intimidating for children undergoing diagnostic imaging.

Laing O’Rourke’s Managing Director, Peter Lyons, said: “The work we have already done with the people who will work here has already shaped these amazing facilities. We’re proud to be involved in this project and to deliver it using our pioneering industrialised construction methods to reduce the manual strain on our people while delivering certainty and quality for our terrific partners at the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust.”

Chief Executive, Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust, Rob Aitchison, said: “In the last two years alone, we have made huge strides in our Foundations for our Future plans. To name a few, this includes a new A&E at HRI and two new Community Diagnostic Centres in the heart of Halifax and Huddersfield. All of which is helping deliver care closer to home whilst improving experience of care.

“Together with Laing O’Rourke, we will also deliver real social value which will ensure our new hospital has a positive and long-lasting impact on our local economy too and create opportunities for local people.”
