NEW trolleys are providing one stop shops for Sepsis treatment in Cardiff.
The new units are a first for Wales and will allow staff to react more quickly when treating septicaemia - a potentially fatal and hard to detect infection.
The trolleys will be fitted with quick release brackets and equipped with all that is needed to quickly treat sepsis.
Dr Paul Morgan, the Sepsis Lead for Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, said: “These trolleys enable staff working on wards to access all they need to treat cases of sepsis as quickly as possible and thereby save lives.”
The 30 trolleys have now been rolled out to 30 areas across University Hospital of Wales including the Emergency Unit and areas covered by the Critical Care Outreach Service. They have been funded by the Specialist Services Clinical Board who provided £30,000 for the project.
The trolleys use a quick release bracket so they can be quickly moved to a patient’s bedside and are checked and stocked on a daily basis - ready for an emergency. They have six drawers that mirror elements of the Sepsis 6.
Gemma Ellis, Consultant Nurse Critical Care and Sepsis Nurse Lead for the UHB, said: “This simple approach will make it easier for ward staff to deliver the sepsis 6 in a timely manner and is a checklist to ensure none of the steps are missed. This should facilitate vital care for the deteriorating patient at ward level.
“Paediatric trolleys in the Emergency Unit have been adapted to deliver paediatric sepsis 6 and will have a friendly Sepsis Tiger on the front to make it less scary for children and their parents.”
The UK Sepsis Trust advised on the development of the Sepsis 6 trolleys and Terence Canning, Executive Director of the UK Sepsis Trust in Wales was delighted that Cardiff and Vale are the first hospital in Wales to roll these out.
He said: “I am extremely pleased to hear that Cardiff and Vale is introducing sepsis 6 trolleys to their wards and Emergency Department. Anything that can improve the speed and ease of administering sepsis care is always welcome and this ‘one stop shop’ is an exciting development.”
