Construction of a new mobility hub at Lister Hospital in Stevenage has begun, with Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) delivering the project as part of its programme to improve bus services and sustainable transport across the county.
Work started on 18 July and is expected to continue until November 2026.
The project will upgrade the existing bus interchange outside the hospital, including three bus stops with real-time passenger information.
It will also introduce new shared walking and cycling paths, additional cycle parking and a direct connection to the North Road cycleway.
A relocated taxi rank, new traffic islands and landscaping and planting will also form part of the scheme.
The mobility hub forms part of wider investment at Lister Hospital, where work is also under way to redevelop the main entrance with new shops and facilities, with completion expected in autumn 2026.
The latest works also follow a £45m, four-phase redevelopment of Lister Hospital completed in 2014, which delivered a new ward block, chemotherapy centre, endoscopy and day surgery centre, and expanded emergency department.
The mobility hub is being delivered under Hertfordshire's Bus Service Improvement Plan and is funded through the Department for Transport.
HCC is working with East and North Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, which manages Lister Hospital, throughout the works.
The project is being delivered in phases, beginning with site preparation and the removal of traffic islands.
Subsequent works include new walking and shared-use paths, taxi rank improvements and upgrades to the bus interchange.
The main hospital entrance on Coreys Mill Lane and the A&E entrance will remain accessible throughout construction, with access for emergency vehicles maintained at all times.
Temporary traffic lights, lane closures, suspended parking bays and changes to bus and pedestrian routes will be in place during the works.
The main construction phase to improve the bus interchange is scheduled to run from August to November, followed by works to install new traffic islands and resurface the road.
The project will conclude with the reinstatement of road, traffic management, entrance, footpath, parking and taxi rank access.
HCC said the completed scheme will provide improved bus, walking and cycling facilities for patients, visitors and staff travelling to and from Lister Hospital.
The project follows the May opening of a new audiology hub at Lister Hospital following major refurbishment by IKON Architects.
In January, IKON Architects was also selected to lead the design of a new paediatric and adult audiology department at Lister Hospital, with R&B Refurbishment named as principal contractor.
